What are fleas?

Fleas are parasitic insects that are a part of the Siphonaptera order. Over 2,500 species are on the planet. Their life spans four stages — egg, larval, pupal, and adult. Their living conditions dictate how long each period is. Blood sustains these bugs, so they bite animals or humans to drink their fluids. Woody and grassy habitats are where they thrive. Fleas are a big problem in the Oklahoma City area.

Are fleas dangerous?

Considering fleas take in the blood of humans and creatures, they can transmit diseases. Some of the conditions they communicate are tapeworms, typhus, and parasitic, bacterial diseases. At a minimum, their nibbles will cause allergic reactions and skin inflammation. Cutting the skin while scratching welts may lead to germs that spur a secondary bacterial infection. Anemia is also a common result of flea infestations.

Why do I have a flea problem?

If your home or business has a yard or is in the vicinity of a vegetated or watery area, flea invasions are possible. Having domestic animals or different pest issues can attract these critters as well. Fleas will jump on the coats of creatures, such as dogs, cats, rodents, and squirrels. They can also jump onto your clothes when you're outside.

Where will I find fleas?

Fleas can be hard to see but not invisible at 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch long. A gleam is on their reddish-brown skin, and their hind legs help them leap. They're wingless and unable to fly. Outdoors, they'll be in places with plenty of greenery, water, shade, or sand. You must be cautious around lawns, parks, ponds, and lakes in Oklahoma City and Idaho Falls. Groups of them will be near rocks, shrubs, and organic debris. Patios and decks are gathering points too. Indoors, they'll congregate by pets, furniture, carpeting, and foundation voids.

When are fleas most active?

Though fleas are active all year, they're especially busy during warmer seasons. It's necessary to monitor things consistently.

Interesting facts about fleas

Below are a few fascinating facts about fleas:

  • Fleas can successively hop about 30 times.
  • Fleas can produce roughly 2,000 eggs in their lifetime.
  • Fleas can consume more than their body weight in blood.

How do I get rid of fleas?

Commercial insecticides and "do it yourself" items for fleas are unreliable. Most won't handle infestations, so they won't rectify your problem. Further, their ingredients may be too toxic for people, domestic animals, and vegetation. These kinds of products are awfully expensive to have so many shortcomings.

How can I prevent fleas in the future?

Shelf goods and "at home" concoctions won't be helpful with fleas, but there are still things you can do to ward off these awful bugs. Necessary tasks involve lawn and animal maintenance. It might be aggravating to keep these things up, but it can be incredibly useful:

  • Cut the grass and trim greenery regularly.
  • Get rid of lawn debris.
  • Replace perimeter soil with gravel; soil magnetizes fleas.
  • Inspect, wash, and brush your pet's hair on a routine basis. Discuss year-round flea management and treatment with a veterinarian.
  • Examine secondhand items carefully before purchasing or using them, such as pet toys and furniture.
  • Vacuum and clean rugs often.
  • Contact Epoch Pest Solutions if you have critters that fleas would target.
