What are cockroaches?
There are many species of cockroaches in the United States, but only a handful are home-invading pests. The cockroaches most commonly found in Oklahoma City are:
- American cockroaches
- Brown-banded cockroaches
- German cockroaches
- Oriental cockroaches
- Smoky brown cockroaches
These pests have flat, oval-shaped bodies with six legs and antennae. Their flying ability varies from species to species.
Are cockroaches dangerous?
Cockroaches are not a nuisance pest but instead are a threat to those whose homes they infest. Cockroaches cause several concerns:
- They spread dysentery, E. coli, cholera, typhoid fever, leprosy, staphylococcus infection, salmonellosis, gastroenteritis, and more diseases.
- They contaminate everything they touch, including personal hygiene products and food, because they leave behind waste and saliva.
- They can trigger allergies and asthma through their waste and shed skins.
What makes cockroaches worse is that they are such challenging pests to get rid of.
Why do I have a cockroach problem?
If you have a cockroach problem in your home, it can be because there are entryways allowing them to get inside. Once inside, cockroaches will stay and reproduce if there is food available, high moisture to meet their needs, and clutter for them to hide in.
Where will I find cockroaches?
The most common places cockroaches gather are in kitchens and bathrooms. However, due to their extensive diets and moisture needs, they can also be in basements, laundry rooms, and around sewers and drains.
Most species are nocturnal, so you won’t see them, but you may catch them scurrying away as you turn on a light. They will likely hide under appliances, cabinets, and sinks.
How do I get rid of cockroaches?
Cockroaches are notoriously difficult to get rid of. While there are many over-the-counter products available for cockroach control, they are ineffective for several reasons, including that they don’t get to the root of the pest problem.
Getting rid of bed bugs is a much easier process when working with a reliable pest control company. At Epoch Pest Solutions, we provide quality and transparent services for every one of our customers. For cockroaches, we use a targeted approach tailored to these pests.
How can I prevent cockroaches in the future?
Keep these dangerous pests out of your home by eliminating food, water, and entry points. Cockroaches are not picky eaters, so ensure that your home is free of crumbs, food grease, garbage, pet waste, and dust. To disrupt water availability, repair leaks and poor ventilation, keep your yard clear of organic debris, and use dehumidifiers in basements, garages, bathrooms, and other areas susceptible to moisture buildup.
Make sure cockroaches can’t get inside by repairing cracks in the foundation, filling in holes around window and door frames, and installing covers on vents and drains.
